The Fiancée Chosen by the Ring Volume 2

Felix and Aurora have been invited to a gala hosted by Felix’s rival, and that means party prep! Designing a dress, remembering the other guests’ names, practicing dancing — fortunately, Felix’s mother and sister aren’t about to let the couple go in, and I quote, “unarmed”. With just two weeks, can Felix and Aurora avoid embarrassment, let alone steal the show?

The Fiancée Chosen by the Ring continues its aim to grab onto fluff lovers and never let them go. I had several criticisms about volume 1, but Felix Clavis certainly wasn’t one of them. That hasn’t changed, but fortunately, some other of my complaints have.

First off, volume 2 doesn’t have anywhere near the choppiness of the first. This is all about the party at the Lumis estate, from the Clavis family prepping Felix and Aurora for the event to the actual soiree itself. And while this allows the pair to have some more time together, one early tea break has Felix explaining more about his fortune-telling hobby. It doesn’t fully address the limitations of magic in this world, but at least it’s something readers learn rather than just relying on assumptions based on other works.

However, no matter if Felix is going to rely more on his magical predictions or continue to dazzle with his traditional magic spells, he — and Aurora, to a lesser extent — are going to be the only two things most readers care about. Felix continues to be smitten by Aurora, and if his adorkableness as he navigates these new feelings wasn’t enough sugar for a shoujo lover’s soul, well, then him rattling off a list of her charms after Aurora calls her appearance average will.

Speaking of Aurora, she decides to “fight” at the party in her own way, with her knowledge of fashion. It’s a nice combo of her internal fortitude and a hobby that is often dismissed as silly. Aurora is also no social butterfly, but she’s a queen bee compared to her fiancé. The two are really a likeable couple, because even though Aurora doesn’t really like conversing, she takes the reins because she’s the better of the two. That’s another quality Felix admires in her.

The Fiancée Chosen by the Ring thrives on these situations which seem apt to be tagged on social media as #relationshipgoals, and even the incident at the end is all but setup for another Felix x Aurora moment. The artist certainly dedicates a lot of pages to showing them off, and that’s certainly better than the choppiness of volume 1. Story-wise, volume 2 brings little else to the table besides sweetness, but sometimes, a cute couple is all you need.
