Yuu’s life has been unfortunate. He lost his parents in a car accident when he was five, lived with different relatives who found some way to dislike him over the years, and now his uncle is sick and in the hospital. Now he lives alone in his uncle’s house. Or at least he thought he did! As he ended up trying to find his uncle’s insurance card, Yuu had no choice but to look in the storehouse — or the place his uncle warned him not to go in. Naturally, he manages to discover something he shouldn’t have.
Though I imagine he didn’t expect a sexy, voluptuous demon to emerge out of there!
This particular demon claims she can grant any wish Yuu desires. And so, the one wish he asks for is for her to become his sister. When he wakes up after fainting, the demon appears in human clothing and calls herself Chiyo. They then proceed over the course of volume 1 to either getting know each other (intimately) or teaching Chiyo the ways of the human world. And that’s…that’s honestly it.
You pretty much know what you’re picking up The Elder Sister-Like One for, and it’s not for the story. The actual backstory of it is kinda interesting — like who the heck is Yuu’s uncle? Is he some sort of fantasy sorcerer or something? And Yuu’s upbringing is one to watch, and, in some ways, how he interacts with Chiyo is probably accurate. He’s basically been unloved while growing up and has had no one he could trust or admire. Like, the very first time he meets Chiyo he calls her an angel — note, that she’s scantily clad and huge, has tentacle-like hair, and darkness surrounding her. Not really an angel! But she offered to grant him a wish, which was an offer he decided to take.
…But to be his sister…?
And this is where it begins to feel like the story was thrown in. Like it took its hentai story (yes, same author and everything) but there needed to be something else for the main character, and so this backstory was added. I’m expecting it to be explored in bits and pieces throughout The Elder Sister-Like One’s run. Instead, expect lots of teasing, romantic ecchi escapades, bathtub shenanigans, and the two getting hot and bothered. All of it is drawn well, so the art gets the job the done. The comedy aspects it exhibits, however, are fairly stale.
I think the only thing this series needs to do a better job at is establishing interesting stories. For volume 1 it starts us off with Yuu on summer vacation. This is generally a reverse since harem/ecchi type series usually have the male lead attend school with the demon/angel/etc problem, but the activities that happen during this time are boring. It might have been better if he was enrolled in school, or at least end summer vacation in this volume. Like, it gets to the point where part of a chapter was devoted to Chiyo using her tentacle like hair and using it to clean Yuu’s ear. That’s…that’s supposed to be interesting to read?
Other than that, The Elder Sister-Like One’s decent enough. Based on how it’s telling the story (it starts by having Yuu say “At a certain point in my life…”), all of these events happened already and we’re being told them. It just needs to find a way to be funnier in some aspects and at least attempt to flesh out both Yuu’s and Chiyo’s past in some manner. But my guess is it’ll stick to getting the two “relatives” aroused…
