The demons once again have to deal with Syalis’ selfish demands for sleep in volume 9 of Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.
However, even she seems to finally realize this?!? That because of her experimentation and desire for sleep she’s causing headaches for the demons?
So yes, we see her genuinely feeling bad this time. This time, she’s really sorry for turning the demons into kiddos because she herself wanted to be a kiddo so she can achieve another restful sleep.
You can probably guess her guilt over this doesn’t last too long.
Anyways, the humor and fun continues with Syalis and crew! While there is a big summer festival that the Demon King really wants to go off very well, the other hilarious events in the castle take precedence. We have to see Syalis become a manga artist and this manga even poke fun of its existence, see her attempt to nurse the demons as they try and get over their hangovers, and even see her taking part in creating a demon house in preparation for the summer festival–
…Something tells me a few of these things revolve around the summer festival huh!
Ok, those do, but these don’t: Dawner, the hero who is SUPPOSED to rescue the princess declares he’ll do it in the most generic way possible; Syalis ends up becoming frightened after reading a ghost story but is not aware it’s talking about the demons she’s already met; and as usual, one trip to attain peaceful sleep ends with the head of the Demon King (statue) all broken and in shambles. And this doesn’t actually include the time where the demons really want her to stay with them, so they grant any of her requests. Those happen to be giving her:
- Rope soaked in oil
- Glue for bricks
- Gunpowder
- The horns atop the demon castle
- A remote control detonator
(why anyone would carry that?!? Demon Cleric wh–)
But yes, the summer festival was indeed fun, if only because it did indeed have Syalis acting as a hostage. She wore tattered clothing (is 100% demon teddy fur), was in cuffs (was just duct tape) and even got the Demon King to “drag” her around the festival to be shamed, causing the demons to think he really is an cruel demon! She even looked sad!…But at this point in this series, you already know Syalis has ulterior motives for doing this, and it’ll take a very rash decision to stop her from accomplishing what she wants again!
Between the humor and the art (which continues to get better and better) and the set-ups, this is definitely another strong volume. This manga only has one real premise, and yet, it’s always consistently a riot. The fact that it continues to do so speaks well to the creator and I can only look forward to more of what Syalis does to get her well-deserved sleep.
