Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle Volume 15

We return to the scene of crimes against the demons, er, Princess Syalis being generous by giving numerous sleeping tips. If you thought a mythical god would prevent her from getting that good rest, you’d be better off assuming that god is unwittingly taking part in making sure she does. And if you thought some wild beasts would be in snarly, fearsome shape in order to face the hero, you’ll instead see them become toothless and adorable in the hands of Syalis herself.

But we have a major change in the story that ends up flipping the kidnapping scenario upside down — the Demon King himself, Twilight, has been abducted! What a stunner! How will the demons overcome this unexpected situation?

Ok, the better question to ask is how will Syalis harm the attempt to get him back when she certainly has her own agenda in mind!

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle volume 15 only has three unrelated (ok, one does somewhat tie into the god subplot) one-shots, and one of them involves Syalis discovering not even Doraemon can help her get quite the sleep she wants. The first major storyline is the arrival of the sun in the demon world. Normally something like that would be pretty standard, but there’s never sun there — why is this happening and how can Syalis totally take advantage of the situation? Well, that’s because due to religious faith declining, Zeus decided to take his talents to the demon castle. While the demons (particularly Zeus’ brothers Poseidon and Hades) have to get used to their new member, Syalis ends up getting Zeus to make it snow and bring cats into the castle, among the other things she does. Let’s not get into how she attempts to get Zeus and Poseidon’s money along the way.

The second major storyline involves Twilight getting taken as a hostage. After we get a flashback to Syalis getting abducted by Twilight, the whole demon castle goes Code Red after they learn he’s been taken by the dragon species…and Syalis overhears this. Syalis and a few of the demons then travel to Kowloon Island, where apparently the island never sleeps. That only makes Syalis determined to find out why. What she ends up learning is she can sleep on a dragon and Twilight got kidnapped by his crush, Agave.

This volume won’t be the last we see of Agave, but we get a bit into her backstory involving Twilight, her view of hostages (especially after hearing how Syalis has been treated…without realizing that she’s been talking to Syalis the entire time), and all of a sudden Syalis turning into Conan by putting together the clues and mysteries between the two. Agave’s a fun addition to the cast, though we’ll see if she’ll drop her tsundere tendencies once she shows up in the demon castle.

Otherwise, this volume includes Syalis turning into a veteran media member as she peppers Zeus with questions about sleep modes, making it rain, and warming up a small container at a press conference and her finding a way to turn her and a dragon she rides into an anime short. Incredibly vibrant and fun art and two strong storylines continue to make Sleepy Princess an always entertaining read.
