CITY Volume 2

It’s fair to say you’ll encounter some weird people in your life. With the billions of people out there, you’ll definitely meet someone strange. It just depends on where you go — a school, a club at school (or a club club), etc. You also will encounter some weird people if you go to a city or town or some part of a country.

For Arawi’s CITY, you’ll meet a bunch of those weird people, and maybe some more odd designs.

It’s important to emphasize again that there’s no central story to CITY, as it’s purely comedy all the way. For CITY volume 2, for example, it doesn’t leave us off with anything from the last volume, it just does its own thing. And that means Midori is once again doing her best to mooch off her friend Niikura, but in different ways. But now we have other characters take the spotlight! From Wako Izumi’s strange fascination with Niikura and Midori, to the author and editor segment that again ends in tears, to one of the weirdest soccer matches ever put to paper…the stories are certainly varied for sure.

That said, the stories I continue to find amusing. The artwork continues to be delightful as well. Yet I can’t say it’s laugh out loud funny right now. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some strong comedy moments — the soccer segment was actually nuts — but I kind of think back to something like Sleepy Princess or Aho Girl which had laugh out loud, I’m crying moments. Can’t say CITY has been like that yet for me.

However I do think it’ll happen. There’s definitely going to be a volume where the humor kicks in, and it will be absolutely glorious. Either way, for those who’ve been reading Arawi’s works, you still definitely should be reading this series. For now, I can appreciate CITY as a solid and wild manga that should continue to break out as the series continues.
