Chio's School Road Volume 3

The escapades of going to school continue for Chio, Manaka and the rest of the cast in volume 3 of Chio’s School Road! Normally getting to school should be uneventful. It should be a good walk to class, a nice bus ride over, or a train ride away.

Instead, we have an idiot taking what she’s learned from gaming and applying it to real life. I think it’s fair to say we know how that’s gonna go…

So what is Chio getting herself up to this time? Well, she’s a big time gamer, and her gaming schemes involve fooling her mom whenever she’s playing games at night. One night however, she ends up staying up too late, and on top of that she wakes up in the middle of the night. How will she get to school on time? And why does it involve Manana and a shrine? Speaking of Manana, her running into the Kabbaddi girl isn’t actually on her list of things to do, but, well, sometimes things happen for a reason. Between that and Chio finding out why boys love is beloved, there’s definitely different stories that can make you laugh in this volume.

But for me, it remains either amusing or just plain forgettable.

The appeal for Chio’s School Road is the lack of showing what happens in school, so that generally means the stories everyone gets into must be funny or creative. So Chio attempting to find a workaround from staying up too late or the Kabbaddi girl that’s training with a former businessman who is now homeless (because he groped a high school girl ages ago) and discovers that she is very much into girls and feeling up their butts isn’t really that funny. Chio not realizing that in order to execute what happens in games she has to actually physically train to do it (and when she realizes this she tries to take Manana down with her) or when discovering the appeal of BL means trying to buy it at the convenience store while a former gang member (that she knows) is the cashier, that’s funny. But so far with the series, it’s you enjoy the horsing around, or you don’t.

The last story involves Momo, who witnesses Chio and Manana’s horsing around in one of the chapters in volume 3, and how she joined the disciplinary committee. It’s nothing special, but it provides some context as to where she stood within her class and how her teacher gave her something she could do. It also explains why she totally has feelings for him. There’s a good chance those feelings won’t be expressed to him anytime soon. Anyways, let’s see if Chio and the rest of the crew involve themselves in something funnier in the next volume.
