Haruaki Abe’s got it made — he’s able to be a teacher. The problem is he happens to be teaching monsters, and he’s terrified of them. In this volume, those issues clash as he struggles to get his class at the academic level he needs. Then, in addition to that, his twin brother wants him to leave! What will Haruaki do to solve his problems!
Well, if you sadly suggest more sailor uniforms…
A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School volume 2 again brings forth a different assortment of comedic tales. We do get a bit of backstory regarding Haruaki’s anti-youkai power, but also him foolishly climbing a Daidarabocchi. We then see him continue to shy away from his students when they’re all tasked to scare the pants off of everyone (minus himself, the elderly, the pregnant, the sick, or children). The only real changeup for A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School, however, is when Haruaki’s twin brother, Ameaki, is introduced.
While Haruaki is frightened of monsters, Ameaki despises them. On a trip back home with a festival approaching, Haruaki’s favorite students — Sano, Beniko, Hijitaka, and Mamekichi — end up heading to his place to bug him. This is when they meet Ameaki. He seems fairly cool and honorable — he stood up to two dudes bugging Beniko — but is cold and also very worried about his brother. It’s to the point where it almost borders on obsession, and now the students have to find some way to get Ameaki to like them…well, sorta.
Again, the focus of this manga is being comedic. Even when we have a situation where a human teacher gets a vaccine shot in his head (from a big needle) to two monster kids terrorizing Haruaki, it’s doing its best to stick to that level. It’s mostly appreciated. The jokes are still pretty funny, and with interesting character designs (the nurses are next level freaky) and good timing, I can’t help but laugh out loud at anything that happens with everyone. The big issue though is no one really stands out at the moment. With the number of characters that do take up this volume, it just gets a bit hard remembering all of them.
For now though, it’s perfectly fine. This doesn’t necessarily have to change track as long as it can deliver on telling a fun, comedic tale. So that probably means give me more of Haruaki attempting to survive at this ghoul school.
