The OASG Podcast

Show Notes

The start of this week’s episode begins with George Floyd, and what has happened since his death May 25. Needless to say, this was the moment where just about everyone said enough is enough, whether it’s from your friends, anime and manga companies, the works. That’s our stance as well. We’re all human. We’re not perfect. But we can learn from our mistakes and do better. The loss of Floyd’s life in the way it happened is a mistake that should not happen again, and we must do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t.

Below are organizations and resources you can support. This is obviously but a few and it’s not just throwing support here; it’s in your community; it’s online…the ways to help are endless. All we can say is sometimes things don’t get solved in just a day or a week or a month, etc. We can, however, take the necessary steps to make sure it does get solved for good. And that’s by doing what we can as humans to try and A) End discrimination B) End police brutality against Black people and C) Improve the communities we all live in.

Up to date timeline of events occurring

30:14: Justin finally finished up Demon Slayer, and thinks he understands why the manga’s been such a massive hit. Helen only briefly talks about it since she did a spoilercast on another podcast. She instead talks about The Promised Neverland’s ending and watching The Legend of Galactic Heroes remake.

Pandemic News

40:02: Major S2 came back on the air…only to announce after its 7th episode that it would be going on break due to COVID-19. Other delays: Dropout Idol Fruit Tart, Tsukiuta. The Animation S2 (which was supposed to come out in 2019…and now it’s scheduled for this October) Pokemon the 23rd movie, Gekijōban Seitokai Yakuindomo 2, Gundam: Hathaway, Tokyo 7th Sisters, BONES’ ‘Josee, the Tiger and the Fish’, Thunderbolt Fantasy S3, & Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet.

44:39: A few more anime are returning after being delayed: No Guns Life‘s second half (which was announced yesterday it’ll air July 9), The Misfit of Demon King Academy (July 4) My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3, (July 9), Sword Art Online: Alicization War of Underworld Part 2 (July 11). Anime that were airing during the spring season: Zoids: Wild Zero (June 19), Hakushon Daimaō 2020 (June 20), Chibi Maruko-chan & Sazae-san (June 21), Appare-Ranman! (July 23), Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater (July 28). Finally, a few dubs from FUNimation have returned, from Plunderer to My Hero Academia.

48:10: Square Enix publicly announced they’ll be delaying a couple titles, which is understandable. But as Justin notes, aside from VIZ, most publishers are delaying their titles. That’s going to be the norm for a while. Also CR Expo and Small Press Expo are now cancelled, which is definitely expected, but definitely going to affect a lot of people. Justin begins wondering about Anime NYC and what we should really be expecting from the convention.

News

54:52: So yes, Shaman King will return, which only makes Justin think back to his childhood and the all-too memorable opening. No seriously, he really goes back in time.

But yes, the series will be getting a reboot in 2021.

57:36: Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association is working with a number of creators as part of an anti-piracy campaign, and the big thing here is they also have it in English as well.

59:10: The Promised Neverland is over…well, the manga at least! Amazon will be turning the series into a live-action adaptation…which somehow leads to the two hosts bringing up Spider-Verse and Katsucon.

1:00:00: Justin’s not gonna quite take back saying Netflix has been a boon for anime since they’ve been streaming…but the enthusiasm for that take is cooling down fast after anime insiders in Japan explain how the service is hurting studios. Combine that with how much animators are getting paid, and despite them helping connecting global artists and how much they pay out, Netflix is coming off as far too stubborn and unhelpful.

1:08:55: We finally found out how much ufotable and former founder Hikaru Kondo allegedly avoided paying in taxes, and it sure seems like a high amount.

Licenses

1:09:51: Just when you think the pandemic would dissuade anyone from wanting to publish stuff, instead it appears this period has just emboldened them to announce they’re joining the industry! Star Fruit Books is their name, and they’ll be releasing Minami Q-Ta’s Pop Life digitally. Justin just can’t believe it.

1:14:01: Fanfare/Ponent Mon is gonna release Yukari Takinami’s I Wish I Could Say “Thank You”, which is another autobiographical manga that will be on the market.

1:15:09: So Justin and Helen were wondering how Anime Limited was going to bring B: The Beginning to North America. Announcing Shout Factory is a part of this answers that question.

1:15:39: Justin and Helen will definitely talk next podcast about what Kodansha licensed this past week. But for this episode, they discussed the number of Cells at Work manga that’ll be available digitally next month. Oh, and a Slime spin-off manga.

1:18:23: J-Novel Club did their Twitch stream a few weeks ago, and announced they’ve licensed:

  • Ichiro Sakaki and Katsudansou’s When the Clock Strikes Z
  • Minto Higure and Napo’s Monster Tamer
  • Nobiru Kusunoki and Arico’s The Epic Tale of the Reincarnated Prince Herscherik
  • Yui and Yui Kikuta’s Bibliophile Princess manga
  • Haruka Momo and Alaskapan’s The Tales of Marielle Clarac manga

They will also release Otherside Picnic, Infinite Dendrogram (the manga), and Seirei Gensouki in omnibus print format.

1:21:12: And in final bit of licensing news, Icori Ando’s Butterfly Storage and Akihiro Ononaka’s The Flavors of Kumika are now up on Manga Planet; Discotek ended up licensing the Caligula anime.

Streaming News

1:21:45: Crunchyroll just added Mon Colle Knights and Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki OVA Season 4 to its service. Netflix, meanwhile, is now streaming a couple arcs of One Piece, Okko’s Inn, and Mirai.

Weird News

1:23:34: Domestic Girlfriend finally ended…and boy did it sure end in the most Domestic Girlfriend way. Justin has a take regarding how this was all handled…aside from saying English-speaking fans should not be attacking the author on Twitter (especially when it’s not out officially)

1:27:11: Discotek is going to release Mon Colle Knights and Medabots Season 3 physically at some point. However, they’ve put out a call to hope someone might be able to help them get the dub masters to both of these shows. Otherwise, it might just be a sub-only release.
