Show Notes

0:00: Justin and Helen return after a month break and get back into the podcasting spirit! By diving right into pandemic news!

Pandemic News

1:42: And in mere moments after the two hosts talked about UniteUp & NieR: Automata — two titles produced by Aniplex — were delayed due to COVID-19, another Aniplex-produced anime, Ayakashi Triangle, then announced they too would have to delay future episodes as well. Justin and Helen can only speak to Aniplex just having some major scheduling issues (and a good article posted today elaborates even further), and not about what happened to Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, which will be delayed after episode 6 due to COVID-19.

News

6:34: Justin and Helen discuss the surprising news that an official publisher would voluntary halt official simulpubs of their own titles and why it’s not the best decision, even if a purported Kodansha English service is in the works.

12:44: Amazon is laying off 18,000 people, either now or over the next couple months; this also includes ComiXology, which they are laying off all the roles within that department.

13:33: Peter Tatara last month has moved on from Leftfield Media and now is starting a position at the Japan Society.

Streaming News

18:51: The first 42 dub episodes of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai are now streaming on Hoopla; meanwhile, Season 3 of the World Trigger dub is up on the service as well…but not Season 2 for whatever reason!

19:43: Netflix is now streaming Demon Slayer “Season 2”. Everyone later found out it was Mugen Train that they’re having as season 2.

20:06: And we have some early Summer Season anime news, with Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead going to stream on Hulu.

Main Topic: Winter Anime 2023 First Impressions

20:53: Justin and Helen give thoughts on a packed Winter season, even despite the delays, though while comparable to Winter 2021, the actual quality is a bit less than that season.

Weird News

1:30:03: Let’s just say one publisher of a popular mobile game found out someone was making NFTs of their characters. You can guess what happened next.

1:30:51: Meanwhile just when you thought the Final Season of a popular anime series could not get any less Final, we now know Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3 will be split into two parts. Did no one consider that the audience can wait until it’s all done or…?

1:34:15: The Evangelion staff had to apologize for plagiarism after Chinese fans noticed similarities of the marketing poster with another poster done years ago. Whoops!

1:35:13: Due to politics, Belarus is now allowing their people to pirate Japanese works, so yes, people over there apparently can pirate anime and manga with no guilt!

1:36:51: The only thing Justin wonders is what exactly went on in How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord’s second season that it is now outright banned for sale in Australia.

1:37:57: Makes sense for an NFL team to use Titan and Titans together, which the Jaguars did in their final regular season game.

1:38:34: Someone found out that using AI to VTube can have some pitfalls. Big ones.

1:39:42: Meanwhile Hideo Kojima apparently still wants to live on, even as AI.

1:40:35: Finally, Bocchi the Rock!’s creator really just lived the Suffering From Success meme in real life during the recent Comiket.
