Show Notes
0:00: Justin and Helen explain how they’ve been shirking select responsibilities on the site either because one’s consumed by more library books (Reincarnated as a Slime manga, Children of the Whales, and Yona of the Dawn) while the other’s consumed by J-Novel Club’s titles (Realist Hero, Sorcerer’s Receptionist, Marielle Clarac manga, and The Apothecary Diaries, where Helen gets to the part where Maomao encounters one apparently unique “frog”.)
Pandemic News
10:10: Japan has continued to have issues with COVID-19, and it was a factor in the death of actor Sonny Chiba, who passed away due to pneumonia caused by COVID-19. This extends into the anime industry, where long-time director Takashi Watanabe essentially called out certain studios who are hiding COVID issues, as he knows one is on lockdown and there is a gag order. It’s also likely a widespread thing across Japan.
17:15: We did have one anime this season that has been affected — Tsukipro the Animation 2 has been postponed as they’re having COVID-19 issues; the Luminous Witches anime has been delayed from 2021 to 2022; and The Deer King film has been delayed due to COVID-19 again.
18:50: Meanwhile one franchise is certainly affected by the pandemic — The IdolM@ster Shiny Colors cast cast did not appear at the Animelo Summer Live 2021 this past weekend as related personnel of the group tested positive. This is on top of the 12 VAs for The IdolM@ster SideM group testing positive for the virus early in August. Meanwhile the The IdolM@ster Cinderella Girls concert that was planned for this month has been delayed due to the ongoing State of Emergency.
News
20:07: Variety talked to the director of applied analytics at market research firm Parrot Analytics, where he said anime consumption has doubled since 2017. Justin and Helen discuss this particular news item.
23:49: Interesting news involving The Drops of God, as it’s getting a live-action TV series involving the US, French, and Japanese companies. The two hosts discuss this unexpected partnership.

Separately they announced they’ve simulpubbing the vending machine isekai. It’s interesting to note the LNs finished years ago, but there’s now a manga version of it.
34:46: Cross Infinite World is now jumping into doing audiobooks too! Reincarnated as the Last of My Kind and Reset! The Imprisoned Princess Dreams of Another Chance! are the first two ones, which gets Helen remarking on how all of a sudden light novel audiobooks are becoming a thing.
37:07: Last Gasp has licensed Keiji Nakazawa’s prose memoir Barefoot Gen Can’t Forget (Tentative Title) & I Saw It, which was published by Educomics back in 1982; and author Keisuke Makino mentioned on Twitter that a US publisher did license Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu…Justin and Helen speculate who.
Weird News
39:07: Cool weird news to kick things off: Kazuo Umezz created a new work! It’s his first work in 26 years.
40:12: Something resuming after 6 years is somewhat notable, but for Mamoru the Shadow Protector, Justin can only wonder just what in the world is the reason for this coming back.
43:52: We got a soccer player doing the Luffy gear pose, but this only mystifies Helen; meanwhile, if you thought the isekai trend was going to die anytime soon, now Lupin the 3rd has been summoned to another world. It’s going to be a while for sure…
