Show Notes
0:00: Justin and Helen again talk from different locations thanks to the internet to share what they’ve been up to over the past two weeks. This is also where Helen reminds Justin of the anime he was supposed to watch at JFF Plus: Online Festival, but failed to!
Pandemic News
11:30: The 24th Detective Conan film now has a theater date in Japan (April 16, 2021) after it was delayed this year; S3 of Thunderbolt Fantasy, which was planned for this year, is now going to air sometime in April.
12:55: Anime Milwaukee had to cancel their February 2021 convention, and may see if they can hold one in the spring, but are planning for virtual events in the meantime; on the other hand, Anime Dallas had a convention, and yes, someone there was exposed to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 a week prior to the con. That someone is the President and Convention Chairman! Justin and Helen have much to say about that one.
16:37: Square Enix is now starting a permanent work-from-home program, which Justin believes will be the standard moving forward.
News
17:57: Funimation and Crunchyroll (and Sony Pictures) announced they are back together again! Justin and Helen discuss this major anime news and how this will affect the anime industry once this deal is official sometime in 2021.
26:28: As you already know, Demon Slayer is popular. So it’s not surprising that it’s final volume sold a lot of money…in its first week in stores!
27:48: Disney did their investor day thing and announced way too many things — one of them is going to be Star Wars anime shorts! Still don’t know the studios, but it might just be a mix.
29:42: Eiko Hanamura passed away at the age of 91, and Justin and Helen briefly discuss her influence on shoujo manga. For more information, it’s definitely worth checking in and reading this article on her impact.
31:24: The creator of Dokaben, Shinji Mizushima, officially announced his retirement after starting in 1972.
Licenses
32:33: Discotek made announcements!…Ok, not those announcements! This episode was recorded before Discotek Day, and so we can only talk about the anime they announced before the event:
- Bananya and the Curious Bunch
- Lupin III: The Columbus Files
- Acrobunch (which will be a SD-BD release)
- Brave10
- KONOSUBA – God’s blessing on this wonderful world! Season 2
- Miss Machiko (which will be a SD-BD release)
34:00: Sentai Filmworks licensed Cagaster of an Insect Cage, pet, and Aragne: Sign of Vermillion. So slowly, but surely, stuff on Netflix and Amazon are going to home video…
35:20: Kodansha Comics, as Justin pretty much expected, will release Peach Boy Riverside in print (just too many signs pointed that way); maybe a bit unexpected, but Shangri-La Frontier is now being simulpubbed, which is fairly quick — the manga started in the summer.
37:07: Kaiten Books announced they’ve licensed three titles:
- Chinkururi & Syuu Haruno’s Gacha Girls Corps
- Tsukiya’s The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting
- Yuuki Kimikawa & Tsumumi’s Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant!
38:30: Oh hey, Pink Heart Jam is back! Obviously there was a major issue that led to its second chapter getting cancelled, but now futekiya will be simulpubbing it next week.
40:06: Need more Josei? Manga Planet’s got you covered as they’ve announced 11 of them:
- Ayu Inui’s Teiji ni Agaretara

Streaming News
49:40: Crunchyroll is now streaming Oh, Suddenly Egyptian God, Boogiepop Phantom and also Yamibo; interestingly enough, they’re going to be streaming Azur Lane: Slow Ahead in January, but the main anime is streaming on Funimation.
52:15: Funimation is the first service that will be streaming the dub of Demon Slayer. Sounds like it’ll be going to other services eventually based on how it’s worded.
Weird News
52:54: GoHands did the thing that you’re not supposed to do since the internet can always catch you. And, well, they apologized about doing something without getting permission as they work on Tokyo Babylon.
55:28: Tamosan’s The Day I Was Forced to Marry God: The Cult Known as Jehovah’s Witnesses — Part I and The Day I Divorced God: The Cult Known as Jehovah’s Witnesses – Part 2 has been listed for a good month or so on comic book shops, and it appears it has been licensed…by DMP. Yes, that DMP. The one with Kickstarters still unfinished. That DMP. Justin can only express his disappointment in this section. Also more weird stuff (currently not on online retailers when it’s slated for late January, misspelled name for the first cover of The Day I Divorced God), alongside DMP licensing a new title, is what landed it in this section!
59:35: Slime x Slime collaboration! Rimuru meets the cast of By the Grace of the Gods, and Helen was expecting this!
1:00:56: Finally, it’s happening: there’s going to be a hockey anime! Justin can’t believe it’s taken this long, but it seems like it’ll happen.
1:02:45: Yuu Watase’s starting to work on bringing Arata: the Legend back! This series has been on hiatus since 2015.
1:03:34: And finally, Naomi Osaka’s a pretty known star in the tennis world. Now she’s going to have her story told in manga form!
