Show Notes
0:00: Justin and Helen explain what they’ve been up to over the past two weeks. For one host it involves a well-known fantasy protagonist and for the other, scrolling through the HIDIVE catalog.
Pandemic News
7:38: There’s a couple things coming back in Japan in terms of shows and films getting rescheduled, though there have been a couple actors testing positive for COVID-19. However, over in the US, we have more conventions getting cancelled. Anime Weekend Atlanta was cancelled, and so was Nebraskacon. We’ll talk next podcast about a major New York convention (…maybe two?) getting cancelled, but in the meantime you can learn how Helen managed to watch a bunch of Otakon at home panels.
Trash
14:12: Over the past couple weeks some people did awful things, which led to this section! We start with Tatsuya Matsuki getting arrested for committing an incident act on two middle school girls. The two hosts basically figured, based on past Shonen Jump history, the severity of what Tatsuya did, and how new the property was, that it would get cancelled (it did). Since then we know both US Shonen Jump and MANGA Plus decided not to publish the final chapter, and VIZ will stop publishing the print version.
22:51: The police arrested an executive from SKE48 after it was alleged he paid minors to perform illicit sexual activities. We all have to wonder what the executive was exactly thinking.
23:31: Sumito Oowara made a situation (where readers were concerned about him following multiple pixiv artists who drew erotic art of children) somehow worse with his statement.
26:25: And finally, the lead vocalist for RADWIMPS, Yojirou Noda, attempted a joke on Twitter that can really only be described as Pro-Eugenics.
News
28:16: We of course had to discuss the news of Shaman King, which, after every problem that happened to it, it ends with it being delayed indefinitely. Both hosts are completely confused as to how Kodansha let it get to that.
30:30: Somehow we are talking about Trump in this episode after one thing he did might actually affect video games? Needless to say, there’s a lot we don’t know. The only thing to watch is to see if companies start making statements about it.
33:00: Studio Arms unfortunately had to declare bankruptcy, and the two wonder what led to this happening.
33:43: Captain Tsubasa is getting a complete bilingual edition, but will be on Progress Technologies eOneBook reader device. English Tsubasa sounds great, but in this format, it might not be enough for Justin and Helen to jump in.
36:00: After retiring 5 years ago, Shizuka Furuya is returning to voice acting. Why did she retire? She explained in an interview that she was hit by a truck in a traffic accident, and half her body was paralyzed. She now feels like she can come back from that, and yeah, the two hosts hope she can indeed come back into voice acting.
37:14: My Hero Academia is so popular, it was the 2nd most in-demand title in the last 60 days!
38:40: Hey! Remember when The Island of Giant Insects was getting Kickstarted last year? No? That’s probably fair because it flopped. But just when you thought it was done…it’s back! And yes, it’s a much lower goal, but Justin can only still be mystified at why they’re trying to dub this.
41:24: Since we’re into remembering things, remember when Crunchyroll was a pirate site? Yeah that was a long time ago. Now, as a legit site, they recently announced they crossed the three million subscription mark! That’s good news for them, but that only means they need to continue to do better with the service and the people who work for them.
43:24: This one falls between actual news and weird news: FAKKU is going to contest a Shenzhen company for trademarking the word “Ahegao”. If this actually goes to court…
46:30: eigoManga did a Kickstarter for Enka Sugihara’s First Squad, and it did reach its goal…but both hosts were trying to figure out why this was getting Kickstarted when retailers are looking to release it.
48:22: Aquaplus song composer Susumu Mameda and Hentai creator Aki E-Musu passed away. We at TheOASG send our condolences.
Licenses
49:26: Discotek announced they licensed the New Getter Robo OVA, Isuca, and Lupin III: The Pursuit of Harimao’s Treasure. They talk about a couple other releases for them, and this eventually begins a discussion on where Symphogear was originally streaming somehow.
51:40: While Justin fails to announce SUPER HXEROS property, Seven Seas did announce they licensed that.
54:24: Manga Planet continues to add titles to their service: Keito Yoshikawa’s Raise the Demon, Haruko Okai’s Enoshima Waikiki Cafe and Hajime Yamamura’s Sound of the Sky. This then leads to one moment Justin refused to cut out of the episode.
56:12: Square Enix will be reprinting a couple Final Fantasy XIV Online artbooks next year, but for manga, they announced they’ll be bringing over the Otherside Picnic manga and I Think Our Son is Gay. Justin and Helen is still continuing the extraordinary random Symphogear streaming debate.
58:47: Yen Press announced a bunch of titles last week:
- The print and manhwa version of Chugong’s Solo Leveling

1:04:03: Futekiya is adding more BL titles to their service:

- Thanat’s PERFECT FIT

- Tomoko Yamashita’s Shinsouban Illumination
1:05:28: Lionsgate is releasing a 4K Ultra HD version of Ghost in the Shell. The box looks real good.
Streaming News
1:06:54: With only one day’s notice, Crunchyroll removed 77 Sentai Filmworks from the service. The two hosts discuss why Crunchyroll keeps doing this.
1:09:08: Crunchyroll did announce they added the Strike the Blood OVAs, Hakubo, and the sub version of Zo Zo Zombie. Doesn’t quite make up for the losses, but it is noted.
1:09:44: Funimation added the Sailor Moon R: The Movie & Berserk (Golden Age Arc) films to their service. They added the 2011 version of Hunter x Hunter. They also added K-On and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions for their UK and Irish users.
1:11:02: Retrocrush is adding more titles to their service this month:
- The Fantastic Adventures of Unico (available now)
- Unico in the Island of Magic (available now)
- Arcadia of My Youth – (available now)
- Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX – (available now)
- Medabots Season 1 – August 21
- Swan Lake – August 21
- Dear Brother – August 28
They’re also starting to launch as a linear streaming service.
Weird News
1:13:05: Somehow elements of Breath of the Wild made it into a novel. And the author admitted this was the case on Twitter.
1:14:18: VIZ had the bright idea to recreate the bad Mega Man box art from the late 80’s-early 90’s. For Justin, probably Sakura is ok, Kakashi looks awesome…everything else has issues, and that includes Naruto himself.
1:16:10: There have been protests in Thailand that involve Hamtaro in their own way. Not sure the creators ever counted on that!
1:16:53: And finally, the following occurred after a Florida Congressional Candidate tweeted about Dragon Ball Z being one of the top issues of anime porn:
- Actual anime porn getting sent to his account
- A professional working on Dragon Ball Z “shocked” they’re working on porn. (Obviously joking)
- Helen realizing there’s usually a Death Note scare story around this time, but it hasn’t happened in a while…of course there’s a reason for that.
